Even Mild Brain Injuries Can Be Extremely Serious

Mildbraininjury

There is no question that brain injuries can be grave and serious. Recent studies have shown that the survivors of even “mild” brain injuries are much more likely to develop issues with alcohol and drug addiction than individuals who never suffered a brain injury. Likewise, survivors of brain injuries are far more likely to become irritable, explosive and aggressive under inappropriate circumstances and situations.

However, a new study just revealed that those who suffer just a mild brain injury are actually more likely to die within 15 years after the injury occurred.

The study compared the death and sickness rates of 2,430 people who had received a mild brain injury to a set of 2,430 other individuals who had never had a brain injury.

The results of this study are shocking. In general, those who had received a brain injury were much more likely to die within 15 years after their injury than those who never had one – depending on their age. Adults ages 15 – 54 who had a brain injury were 4.2 times more likely to die (within 15 years after their accident) than those who did not suffer a brain injury. However, this number was less in older adults. Older adults above the age of 54 were only 1.4 times more likely to die within 15 years after their brain injury.

Authors of the study did realize that their methods were not perfect and did not consider factors such as drug/alcohol abuse or changes in neuropathology, and how these factors could explain the study's results. However, the authors of the study are preparing for another round of tests on a new sample population that will take these factors into consideration.
