Colorado Sets Record for Most Motorcycle Deaths

Colorado Sets Record for

A recent headline on KDVR Fox 31 Denver indicated a disturbing trend that is emerging of motorcycle-related deaths in Colorado. They stated that the Colorado Department of Transportation recently completed their reporting based on the vehicle data for 2015, which showed that (106) fatalities occurred last year—an increase of over 11% from the prior year. Additionally, CDOT pointed out a startling statistic that although motorcycles account for a mere 3% of the traffic on our roads, they make up 20% of the traffic fatalities in the state.

In response to the situation, CDOT is ramping up a motorcycle safety campaign that includes advertising on (10) billboards and posters within an estimated (70) bars frequented by motorcyclists. In reviewing the online comments regarding the topic, there are a percentage of residents that feel the money for these campaigns would be better used for other purposes for several reasons. First, many feel that there is no lack of awareness regarding motorcycle safety, meaning that riders clearly recognize the inherent dangers and most know of someone who has suffered a serious injury from an accident. Secondly, the majority of the fatalities occurred to those traveling without wearing a helmet. Lastly, many question whether the placing of posters in bars is going to reach a receptive audience, where it is likely that many of these riders will be consuming alcohol and then getting back on their bikes.

The CDOT is also continuing their efforts as it relates to their Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) program. This program is geared to train beginners and more experienced riders in the promotion of motorcycle safety and is improving in the following ways:

  • By expanding the program in many of the rural and sparsely population sections of the state, where riders have not had prior opportunities to benefit from the training.
  • Through a renewed and strengthened relationship with the Colorado State Patrol, as well as with a variety of more localized law enforcement organizations. The goal in these affiliations will be focused on outreach to a segment of riders found operating their motorcycles in violation of the state’s traffic laws.
  • To work toward securing additional state and federal grants that are intended for safety initiatives and alcohol-related awareness and education.
  • To enhance the relationship with the Colorado Motorcycle Dealers Association, thus providing an excellent opportunity to access this demographic.

In reviewing the data, a large portion of motorcycle accidents result from the driver of another vehicle being careless or negligent. The likelihood of severe injury in a motorcycle-related accident is much higher than those involving cars or trucks.
