National Dog Bite Prevention Week

National Dog Bite Prevention Week

This year, in recognition of National Dog Bite Prevention Week going on May 17 – May 23, we added several new pages to our dog bite injury section to help do our part in educating the public about this “all-too-common” injury.

Dog Bites are More Common than People Think

Dog bites are frightening events that can happen to anybody at any time with an estimated 4-5 million dog bites each year in this country. Children under 12 make up more than 60% of treated victims making them especially vulnerable to dog attacks. It is thought that many of those attacks could have been prevented if the party involved had better knowledge of canine behaviors and safety strategies one should use around dogs.

Celebrate National Dog Bite Prevention Week

May 17 – May 23, 2015

Beginning next week, our blog will be running a series of daily articles to help raise awareness about dog bite prevention and steps to take to keep you and your family safe:

May 18: Staying Safe Around Aggressive Dogs

May 19: Dog Bite Facts

May 20: Why No Two Dog Bites are Alike

May 21: Do You Know the Breeds That Bite?

May 22: Dog Bite Prevention Tips

Dog Bite Prevention Week happens the 3rd full week of May each year and we applaud the effort agencies across the country are putting toward raising awareness for the campaign this year. Veterinarians, shelters, trainers, breeders, groomers and kennels are all doing their part to raise awareness about dog bites and the proper handling techniques designed to minimize and eliminate animal attacks.
