Cities Set Zero Traffic Fatalities Goals

In 2013, there were over 30,000 fatal traffic accidents in the United States. In 2012, there were just over 31,000. Every year, tens of thousands of Americans lose their lives prematurely. Families across the country suffer irreparable loss, and find holes in their lives and hearts that can never be filled. Most unfortunately, every one of these tragedies is avoidable. Car accidents are accidents. We can avoid traffic fatalities in their entirety, and cities around the country are taking a stand to meet that goal. If you've been injured in a serious accident, contact a Colorado traffic lawyer today to discuss your case.

In 1997, Sweden announced its campaign to completely eliminate traffic fatalities. Now, the country enjoys some of the lowest per capita rates of fatal accidents in the world. In 2013, the country experienced record low numbers of traffic deaths, losing 264 people in car crashes. Accidents and deaths have gone down while cars in circulation and miles traveled have gone up. Sweden continues to aggressively pursue their goal of zero traffic fatalities, and proponents explain that “roads in Sweden are built with safety prioritised over speed or convenience. Low urban speed-limits, pedestrian zones and barriers that separate cars from bikes and oncoming traffic have helped.” After the success across the ocean, cities around the United States have launched their own campaigns to achieve zero traffic fatalities.

In 2014, the mayor of New York City announced his plan to eliminate traffic deaths in 10 years. Right now, around 300 people die every year in New York City traffic accidents. To reach the goal, he plans to take a multifaceted approach, including “lower speed limits, more rigorous enforcement of existing laws, and better Street engineering to slow traffic.” In Chicago, another major United States metropolitan area, the campaign to reach zero traffic deaths began in 2012. Since then, the city has worked hard to increase pedestrian and bicyclist safety by increasing dedicated lanes and paths, lights, and offering classes to learn about safely navigating the city via bike. No matter where you live, do what you can to make the roads a safer place for yourself and for your fellow motorists. Always pay attention when you are behind the wheel, and obey traffic regulations.
